#COSPAR2022 The Blog: 5

Wednesday 20 July 2022

We’re staying cool indoors at the Megaron Conference Centre as the temperature rises outside. What happened yesterday?

A diverse day—in all senses of the word, kicking off with the JPL Diversity Breakfast, to talk about JPL’s inspiring approach to diversity and inclusion. One of the many take-away messages was: don’t feel obliged to tick all the boxes when applying for a position.

The business meetings have begun already—remember to show up and get involved in the activity & “business” of your Scientific Commission/Panels. Here’s a lively gang from SC F, the Life Sciences crowd.

And here’s the Panel on Satellite Dynamics (PSD) with the Outstanding Paper Award for Young Scientists recipient, Dimitrios Psychas (right). and PSD Chair Heike Peter, left. Congratulations, Dimitrios!

And the new COSPAR Panel of Social Sciences & Humanities Panel has had a good start with a solid programme & varied sessions. One was the very well-attended Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) workshop, moderated by Mary Snitch, COSPAR’s IDEA Coordination Officer. Ethics and the question of survival were raised in a stimulating panel discussion, with some shocking statistics, & questions from the audience. Proactivity was stressed as being key to maintaining equity and inclusion in any organisation. At COSPAR the IDEA initiative is now an essential part of our strategy and we’re planning more actions to support students and Early Career scientists from all backgrounds. Stay tuned for more details about this in the coming months.

The poster sessions started last night as well (18.00-19.30)—we hope you’ll drop by & see the action, it’s buzzing!

Don’t forget to complete your COSPAR Associate form & put it in the box!
