Today our Guest Editor is Shivesh Kumar, Assistant Professor in Dynamics & Control of Robotic Systems at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, and recipient of the COSPAR Outstanding Paper Award for Young Scientists (OPAFYS). He writes:
“Although my career has been dedicated to robotics research, this is my first venture into the realm of space research conferences. The COSPAR Scientific Assembly has proven to be an exceptional introduction, offering a diverse platform that unites academia and industry stakeholders passionate about space exploration and research. The breadth and depth of topics discussed make this conference an unforgettable experience.
Yesterday I attended the PEDAS session on “Sustainable Space Exploration: From the Mitigation of Space Debris in Earth’s Orbit to the Safeguard of Planetary Environments.” The session featured an exciting program that brought together researchers, thought leaders, industry professionals, and technologists committed to sustainable space exploration. The day began with a 90-minute course by Tim Flohrer on tools developed by the European Space Agency for assessing compliance with space debris mitigation guidelines. Following a coffee break, the first technical session showcased four outstanding presentations on space debris research. Massimiliano Vasile’s application of Percolation Theory to study the health of the space environment was particularly fascinating and holds significant implications for future research.

During the lunch break, the PEDAS Business Meeting featured Carolin Frueh discussing ideas for future panel activities and announcing the COSPAR Outstanding Paper Award for Young Scientists (OPAFYS). I was honored to receive this award on behalf of my co-authors for our paper, “Post-capture Detumble Trajectory Stabilization for Robotic Active Debris Removal,” published in Advances in Space Research in 2023.
In the afternoon, another technical session included five captivating talks from ESA, NASA, KASA, and United Launch Alliance representatives, highlighting the united efforts of major space powers and industry players to address the debris problem in space. This gave me hope for a sustainable future in space exploration.
The day concluded with the Young Researchers Networking Night, where we enjoyed snacks, drinks, and a lively DJ night featuring global pop music, including Spanish hits, American and British tracks, and even Bollywood songs! It was a truly memorable day, and I look forward to the upcoming days of this exciting conference.”
