Fluids and materials may exhibit unusual behavior in space conditions, especially due to the
absence or reduction of gravitational forces, like in space, on the Moon, on Mars or on asteroids.
Many new physical phenomena that arise can be investigated in detail in drop towers, parabolic
flights, sounding rockets, and on board the International Space Station. These studies are not
only of high scientific interest, but are of paramount importance in areas of space engineering
such as astronaut safety (fire propagation), fluid management and life support systems. In
addition, space conditions offer unique opportunities to generate materials of unprecedented
purity or with new properties. The Scientific Commission G reviews experimental, theoretical
and numerical work providing new scientific insights and/or leading to innovative technologies.
It also suggests promising directions for future research and fosters the exchange of ideas within
the space research community.
